This painting was inspired by my love of foxes and the world of the foxes lair and the forest setting. The light within the forest was important to me to light up the dark world of the forest and typical of directional light of this time of year in autumn. I used acrylics as a base and with oils I brought the velocity of colour and blending to the trees and light within. The warmth of the light apparent in some of the canopies above the cool greens of the undergrowth. The undergrowth adds an interesting variety of colour, texture and pattern to the linear composition of the trees and softens the harshness of these contrasts. The cub is looking at the viewer almost to bring the viewer into its secretive, mystical and magical world of the foxes lair while the mother has her gaze fixed on prey or noise within the trees.
